Mt Vernon - Washington's Home

The Mansion house features original furnishings, items owned by the Washington family, 18th-century objects, and a small number of reproductions. The Mansion is depicted as it was in 1799, the last year of George Washington's life. Vibrant wall colors, reconstructed after careful paint analysis, demonstrate the Washingtons’ wealth and sense of fashion.

In designing his estate, Washington organized the outbuildings, lanes and gardens in a way that reflects both the practical and aesthetic sides of his nature. From the north to the south are situated the outbuildings, or "dependencies," where the work of the plantation took place. Today, more than a dozen outbuildings are open, including a working blacksmith shop with daily demonstrations

A 90 minute guided tour of the National Gallery including the Portrait Gallery

The Gibbs-Coolidge Set of the First Five Presidents
The Gibbs-Coolidge paintings are the only surviving complete set of portraits depicting the first five presidents of the United States. Commissioned by Colonel George Gibbs of Rhode Island, the group was painted in Boston during the last phase of Stuart's career. In 1833, Colonel Gibbs' heirs sold the paintings to Joseph Coolidge of Boston, and the set descended through four generations of the Coolidge family. The suite retains its original Federal frames.
